Serena Williams vs Steffi Graf: How Do You Judge Greatness?
One extraordinary season can become a standard for everyone who follows. A career can also be extraordinary because excellence returns, again and again, across changing opponents and expectations. Which achievement carries more weight for you?
First decide what greatness means.
A greatest-player argument can mean the highest peak, the strongest record, the broadest influence or the player you would back in an imagined match. Those are related questions, but they are not interchangeable. An invented meeting between players at their best cannot be checked like an actual result. A historical record can be checked, yet deciding how much it should count remains a judgement. Explain that judgement before presenting the numbers.
The case for Serena.
A Serena argument can begin with excellence sustained over time. The WTA’s September 2022 career review recorded 23 Grand Slam singles titles. [1] That gives longevity a precise meaning: repeated success rather than simply remaining on tour. A supporter might also value the serve, competitive presence or the ambition her career inspired. Distinguish those interpretations from the documented result. Influence matters, but it needs its own explanation rather than being used as an extra trophy.
The case for Steffi.
A Graf argument has an exceptional season at its centre. In 1988 she won the Australian Open, Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and US Open, then Olympic singles gold in Seoul: a calendar-year Golden Slam. [2] The case asks us to value mastery across the full season’s major tests. What weight should a concentrated achievement carry against a longer accumulation of titles? Explain why completing that sequence matters to your standard, rather than assuming a special name settles the comparison.
The difficulty of crossing eras.
Equipment, surfaces, schedules and opponents form part of the environment in which a player succeeds. You cannot remove that environment and preserve every performance unchanged. Nor is it fair to dismiss one era simply because it came earlier. One approach is to ask how fully a player met the challenges available in her own time. Another is to compare a particular skill while admitting the limits of the exercise. Neither requires pretending there is a perfectly neutral formula.
Give the other case its due.
If you favour Serena, say what Graf’s 1988 season adds that a career total cannot express. If you favour Graf, say how Serena’s repeated success tests a peak-season argument. Then choose. A confident opinion can include uncertainty without losing its shape. Tell us which measure you would apply consistently to another champion, and which part of this comparison remains hardest to resolve. The point is to make your standard visible, not to erase either career.
Make your case.
- Would you weight an exceptional season or sustained major success more heavily?
- How should a comparison account for different eras?
- What is the strongest part of the case for the player you did not choose?
